To reduce your sodium intake, choose fresh foods over packaged foods. Read food labels carefully, and choose low-sodium brands when possible.
4. Drink your water
You may think drinking water will make you bloated, but it actually flushes out excess sodium, which reduces bloating. If you’re drinking enough water, your urine should be pale yellow. If it’s dark or you feel thirsty, you’re dehydrated. Drink 8 glasses of water every day, choosing drinks low in calories, sodium, and caffeine such as herbal tea. Avoid soft drinks that are high in calories and sodium. You can get up to half of your water from foods like fruits, vegetables, or low-sodium soup.
5. Don’t eat heavy at night
People who eat their heaviest meal late in the day tend to have lower metabolisms. If you eat lighter in the evening, you won’t feel as heavy in the morning, you’ll be ready for a healthy breakfast, and your metabolism could improve. Eat several times throughout the day instead of three big meals. Two-thirds of your calories should be consumed before dinner. Your body uses calories better during the active part of your day, rather than in the evening when you’re winding down. If you are hungry at night, watch the fat, calories, and sodium. Stick to fruits, vegetables, or other healthy snacks.
6. Reduce your stress
Stress triggers hormones that increase your appetite and build abdominal fat. This type of weight gain is linked to diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Cardiovascular exercise is effective for reducing this abdominal weight gain, and it also helps reduce your stress. If you feel stressed, take a minute to chill out. Take deep breaths, refocus, and relax.
